It is said that the Alcarin were created by the God of wind and air himself. For he so loved all winged beasts that he sought to bring forth a race completely devoted to their protection and well being. Thus was made the legendary Alcarin, whose name means "Glorious", and they it was who became the guardians of all birds. Alcarin are beings of light, and their angelic appearance merely hints at their true power. They have been gifted with flight, and their lives are lived for only the element of air and for the birds with whom they share the sky.
When the wind God made the Alcarin, he thought them special and placed them in his heart above all other races. They were his children, and he wished them to have their home in a place where they would be always close to him, and unreachable by any other. He created a home for them called "Aewendor", the Kingdom of Birds, and it was placed in the sky where he could watch over them at all times. Its golden mountains, crystal rivers, and forests of shimmering green stretched across a vast continent suspended in the clouds. Its range covered a quarter of the planet, with snow and desert and all habitats in between, just the same as was below on the face of Terra-Mythos. Animals, fish and birds were brought to dwell there, so that the Alcarin would never be lonely nor would they go hungry. Only those who could fly would be able to find it, for only those who have tasted flight could truly appreciate such a wondrous place. Only they would be deserving to look upon the Alcarin, to speak to them, to learn from them, or to walk or fly amongst them. Very highly indeed did the God of wind look upon his children.
For many years, the Alcarin thrived in the land of Aewendor. They were innocent then, and seldom left their kingdom in the clouds. When they did venture down to the middle lands, it was usually to visit the Elves, for they had befriended them and saw them now as kin. Both races revered in the splendor of nature, and the Elves taught the Alcarin much about the world below their borders. They learned about art and music, about science and even how to write. For the first time, this primative race was able to soar beyond instinct and truly understand the amazing world around them, to analyze it, to know how things worked and why. They mingled freely with no other race besides the Elves, but were cordial to any well-meaning creature and saw all encounters as an opportunity to gain knowledge. They had not yet learned of war, sickness or evil intent - such darkness had barely begun to exist in Terra-Mythos yet, was only just beginning to fester in the very deepest corners of the Underworld. Their creator smiled upon them, and sought to keep them sheltered from darkness as long as he could. But this was in vain, for it had already reached out its terrible hand and found that humans were the race most easily bent to its will. As they conquered and populated more and more lands, the dark forces that corrupted them spread like a poison, and humans became a plague upon the once unspoiled wilderness. Though far removed, the Alcarin could sense that troubled times were before them. Upon the winds came the smell of something new, unsettling and threatening.
The humans began to spread at an alarming rate, taking what they could from the land and destroying her children. Greed, war and disease followed them wherever they went, and those humans whose souls remained pure were overshadowed by those who had succumbed to the darkness. The Alcarin watched this and it broke their hearts to see such  utter despair and ruin befall Terra-Mythos, for they had come to love it nearly as much as Aewendor and saw it as a second home. It pained them most of all to see their good friends the Elves fighting for all they held dear, and to no avail. They knew the time had now come for them to fulfill their divine purpose. No longer could they ignore the affairs of the middle lands or watch from their safe perch on Aewendor. The Guardians of the Air were being called to action.
And so it was that for the first time since their creation, the Alcarin took up arms and descended upon Terra-Mythos, ready to join their elven allies in defense of the unspoiled wilderness, and all that was good and pure in their world. The mission was clear: drive back human settlement and secure lands in which birds (and indeed all wild creatures) could nest and sing without threat for all time. To the surprise of many, the Alcarin were quite fierce and cunningly skilled in warfare, due to the prior training the Elves had givin them. Arrows and swords were their weapons of choice, and they proved themselves with them again and again. Despite their skill, the Alcarin have not been able to lay down their weapons since the battle began, for it wages ever on until darkness stops its assault on the natural world.

Some battles are fought by an individual, some by an army, but all are fought in dedication to reclaiming the wild and preserving it for future generations. To an Alcarin, taking back a forest where birds make their homes holds as much honor as does mending a broken wing. Great power is blended with greater humility, and so it is that even today the Alcarin retain their status as higher beings, the glorious Children of the Sky.
